Meet the Author: Sara Juliano, RDH

I have been a registered dental hygienist for over a decade. I have had the pleasure of working with amazing patients and educating them on their oral health throughout my career. Recently, I made the conscious decision to branch out within the dental field, choosing to maintain my dental hygiene license, and become a dental educator. With a passion for oral and systemic health, I have seen clinically the direct impact systemic health can have on oral health. I will be extending my knowledge outside of the dental chair into the world and make an impact on the lives of others. Learn more about Sara, here

What is Plaque Psoriasis

Plaque psoriasis is the most prevalent immune mediated autoimmune disease. This disease shares commonality with other inflammatory diseases, with unknown etiology (cause), and have common pathways that generate dysfunction of the cytokines. Cytokine’s purpose in the body is to respond to inflammation and infection. When the body “self-attacks,” as with all auto immune diseases like plaque psoriasis, the cytokines create a cytokine storm in the body and increase inflammation(proinflammatory.)

Plaque psoriasis increases hyperproliferation of the epidermal cells, generating painful skin lesions due to hyper keratinization.  This causes skin to become flakey and irritated and in severe cases, may become infected. Plaque psoriasis can flare up in times of stress or trauma in the body and the severity of the skin lesions can vary depending on their location and size.

Plaque Psoriasis and the Oral Cavity

During a plaque psoriasis “flare-up” the immune system becomes suppressed. There have been recent studies that verify a direct correlation with salivary dysfunction in the salivary glands and plaque psoriasis . This generates a malfunction in the salivary production and increases the risk for xerostomia (dry mouth).

Another recent case study provided critical information to those suffering from plaque psoriasis. During acute inflammatory ‘flare-ups” there not only is an increase in epidermal cell proliferation of the skin, but there is a significantly higher prevalence of Candida albicans in the oral cavity. Candida albicans is an opportunistic yeast that takes advantage of a suppressed immune system. This leads to the formation of thrush on the tongue and buccal mucosa.

The Importance of Oral Health

Being aware of oral implications, especially when there is a systemic auto immune disease, is vitally important to your oral health. Please stay up on having optimal oral health. Decreasing plaque and inflammation in the mouth can significantly decrease plaque and inflammation to the rest of the body. It’s all one system!

Take Control of Dry Mouth

Having a strong salivary flow is vital to your oral health.   Saliva contains components that act as your bodies first line of defense against infectious microorganismsDry mouth can increase your risk for oral diseases. It can decrease the pH in your oral cavity which will in turn increase your risk for cavities. Dry mouth will increase plaque accumulation and reduce the oral clearance of food debrisPlaque formation also increases the risk for gingivitis and periodontal disease. Periodontal disease destroys the connective tissue and bone that supports your teeth.

Oral Health Tips:

  • Brushing 2-3 times per day to decrease plaque formation in the mouth as well as the rest of your body.
  • Flossing daily to keep areas clean between the teeth and gums. This will prevent oral health diseases in the mouth.
  • Use a dry mouth oral solution to prevent dry mouth (Xerostomia) such as Lubricity Dry Mouth Spray
  • Tongue scraper will eliminate plaque buildup on the surfaces of the tongue and decrease the risk for Candida infections in the mouth.
