Hyaluronic Acid & Sodium Hyaluronate

Hyaluronic acid & Sodium Hyaluronate

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic acid (or HA) is a naturally occurring substance within our bodies, and its primary function is to retain water within tissue cells. HA help to keep our joints lubricated, eyes moist, and skin moisturized. It’s typically found in our skin, ligaments, connective tissue, bones, lips, and cartilage.

While hyaluronic acid is mainly known as an ingredient in skincare products, HA is available in serums or moisturizers, injections, supplements, and eye drops. However, more research shows other benefits for our oral and overall health.

Benefits of Hyaluronic Acid

There are many different benefits of hyaluronic acid. Some benefits of hyaluronic acid are:

  • Hydrate skin
  • Heal wounds
  • Repair damaged skin
  • Relieve dry mouth symptoms
  • Lessen dry eye symptoms
  • Combat gum disease
  • Alleviate joint pain
Hyaluronic acid is a powerhouse ingredient, and as more research develops, we find more uses for hyaluronic acid for our overall health

Hyaluronic Acid as an Oral Treatment

HA is an excellent addition to anyone’s routine in need of hydrating their skin or may even come as a recommendation from your doctor or dentist.

Hyaluronic acid has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties when treating periodontal disease. It’s been identified as a treatment for chronic oral inflammation and promotes healing after a dental procedure.  HA may also heal gingivitis oral ulcers, >burns, and sores in the oral cavity.

What is Sodium Hyaluronate?

Like hyaluronic acid, sodium hyaluronate hydrates the skin, heals wounds, moisturizes the oral cavity, and may help alleviate joint pain. Sodium hyaluronate is a derivative of hyaluronic acid and has a smaller molecular structure. As a result, due to this smaller structure, sodium hyaluronate can more easily penetrate the epidermis, which includes the oral cavity. Additionally, the words hyaluronic acid and sodium hyaluronate are used interchangeably.
