Sjogren’s Syndrome was first described in 1933 by Henrik Sjögren, after whom it is named. It is a systemic autoimmune disease. Over 4 million people in the United States suffer from Sjogren’s, making it the most common autoimmune disease in the country. Over 90% of Sjogren’s sufferers are female, and there is no evidence that the disease occurs in only one specific race. There is currently no cure for the disease. Those with Sjogren’s experience dry mouth, dry eyes, fatigue, joint pain, and sometimes organ dysfunction.
Early diagnosis is crucial. Being persistent with doctors and dentists when you know something is wrong can prevent symptoms from worsening. You know your body best. On average, Sjogren’s Syndrome can take up to three years to be diagnosed, simply because its symptoms can be similar to other autoimmune diseases and illnesses. Global awareness of the disease is not where it should be, hence why the disease is often misdiagnosed.
